Last week, the customs officers detected several attempts for smuggling of various goods, seizing clothing, foreign cash, safe deposit boxes and counterfeits.

Clothing

- 93,748 pieces of clothing, detected in two separate cases by the Mobile Customs Teams.

In the first case, during inspection of goods originating in Turkey, destined for a Skopje-based  importer, declared for import clearance at the Customs Office Skopje 1, the officers found 41,800 pairs of socks that were not covered by the customs documents. The undeclared goods were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the importer and its responsible person.

In the second case, 148 pieces of clothing (dresses, shirts, skirts, scarves and tracksuits) were found in two suitcases placed in the luggage compartment during inspection of a Turkish bus traveling from Istanbul to Skopje at the border crossing point Bogorodica, entrance section. The undeclared goods were seized, and a request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be filed against the owner, a Macedonian national traveling on the bus.

Foreign currency

- 3.500 Euros, detected by the mobile customs teams, during personal search of a Macedonian national who arrived at the border crossing point Bogorodica with a Macedonian car and was accompanied by her husband. In the passenger's handbag, the customs officers found 5,500 euros for which she did not have a document concerning the origin of the money. Pursuant the law, EUR 2,000 was returned to the passenger, as an amount that a resident can freely take out from the country. A request for initiation of a misdemeanor procedure will be initiated for the committed foreign currency offence.

Safes

- 10 hotel safe deposit boxes HOMDOC, detected during inspection of a Macedonian registered car, driven by a Macedonian national, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Tabanovce Motorway. The undeclared safe deposit boxes, found in the boot of the vehicle, have been seized, and an appropriate procedure will be initiated against the driver.

Goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights

- 14.730 kg of tea bearing logo of protected trademark, detected by a mobile customs team during inspection of a Macedonian registered truck, declared for entrance at the border crossing point Bogorodica. The products intended for an importer from Kumanovo were seized due to suspicion that they violate intellectual property rights and pursuant the regulations, a procedure will be initiated to determine the tea’s authenticity.
